The Shuttle Columbia made one landing at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico in 1982 when weather made use of the primary landing sites impossible. A landing at Area 51 would be an absolute last resort decision, but the strip and equipment at Groom would be more than adequate to accomodate a safe landing. Probably several of the larger civilian international airports (such as LAX, Atlanta, etc.) would be considered long before choosing Area 51.
