The answer might be as simple as: Engines work better when they have the chance to run and not just on patrol in the sand around the border. To get the trucks out on the open road even for ten minutes a day is much better for them - they'll run smoother and last longer.

Also, who's done 24-7 surveillance on the area? Do gas trucks routinely come in or do fuel planes land at Groom to offload fuel? Surely the security vehicles aren't eco-friendly electric engines and they need gas. Anyone ever see one filling up at the gas station? If you've never seen 'em fill up at the gas station, have you done 24-7 surveillance there to see if they never fill up there?

Or maybe they were just going bowling?
