That's the best advice Joerg.Both Garmin and Magellan have good web sites and provide alot of product info.For someone just getting into GPS an entry level will be fine.If you later decide you want all the extras,get a more expensive model.
My wife has a Garmin Etrex that is just fine for her.I think it was around 100 bucks.If you NEED maps and memory it costs alot more.But do you really need it?
Get a good book on the use of GPS, Lat/Longs and UTMs.
The 7.5 minute topo maps are easier to use with UTMs so it's good to understand that system.It will be easy after you've done it a few times.
