I am not an expert on GPS systems, but Garmin is a good brand to buy. I am using an old Garmin GPS 40 and I am still quite happy with it.
Very important is the ability to download waypoints to the PC (and to your favorite mapping program). Nice to have, but IMO not essential, is the ability to upload maps to the GPS.
