I worked on several black projects when I was with the DoD. We liked to pay attention to UFO reports so that we could determine what had been seen and how much had been seen--sort of a reverse action of the theme of the movie, Men In Black.

In several instances, both on land and at sea, we put on a "show" to detract attention away from the real test. Mostly, the "show" was for the benefit of the Soviets.

Usually our tests were late at night when all but the most ardent UFO observers had retired for the evening, but that wasn't the reason. It is much easier to obtain airspace clearance for a test that was to occurr in the midnight to 2 am time frame. You don't want an airliner to fly through your test area as what was being tested usually involved radar and GPS jamming--but it did sometimes occurr.
