Its a radioactive world. The link Joerg shared shows about 15 uR/hr gamma radiation background. That's less than half the average typical in the United States. Fallout from nuclear testing and its effects are still being studied. In fact, the government "down winders" program of medical monitoring for people generally north and east of the test area has been extended a few more years. People, including my wife, from communities like Ely, Nevada and St.George, Utah that lived in these areas during nuclear tests take annual physicals to detect various cancers. The program pays out people that are affected or die. Check out RESEP. It includes more than just down winders, but also medical workers, certain parts of the nuclear industry, and some uranium miners.
