Given the timeframe, it could be the "rocket pumped ramjet" engine discussed in proposed long-range, Mach 5 cruise, X-15 variants. A lengthened X-15 with delta wings, full landing gear, a 2-man crew, a huge intake underneath the rear fuselage with an S shape up to the rocket exhaust on a regular X-15. Actually take off using a rocket engine to cause enough airflow thru the ramjet to allow it to operate at lower airspeeds.
