They wanted it so badly that when the NGB was cancelled, a lot of the top brass went to war with the political class both in Washington and the Pentagon. It was all out warfare and many a career on both sides was forever scarred by the fallout.

Do you seriously think that the Top Brass would willingly give up a leg of the nuclear triad? No.

What did happen was Afghanistan and Iraq, and combined conflicts bled us dry of billions, with the repercussions of that which will echo through the DoD for a decade or more to come.

As to this comment you made: "they did not want a bomber but more advanced tech without engines and wings", well, I can say this. The days of Flash Gordon and Dan Dare are not quite here yet.
