I think we got our wires crossed here, because of course the F-14 was retired, the F-18 took its place.

What I should have said is that 'the naval F/A-XX is being designed to take up the role (capability) that the USN lost with the retirement of the F-14; Long-ranged high speed high altitude stand-off fleet defense (The F-18 is in no way shape or form capable of this role).

I do however stand by my size comments. The USN is going through a sudden wake-up call as to just how vulnerable they are now that the potential foe has teeth and reach. These birds will be big.

Hope that clarifies it a little.
