The F/A-XX is intended to replace the Super Hornet, and I know that Boeing began looking at design studies for a stealthy successor to the Super Hornet (only a few CG renderings of the Boeing F/A-XX design have reached to public domain, but they do incorporate elements of the design philosophy of the Bird of Prey and X-36). Recall that the US Navy in the late 1980s began shopping for a stealthy replacement for the F-14 Tomcat and that a navalized F-22 with swing wings was among the designs submitted for the NATF requirement, yet by 1992 the NATF program was mothballed on grounds of cost, leaving the Navy to select the proposed Hornet 2000 (which became F/A-18E/F) as the F-14 successor.

Whichever design wins the F/A-XX competition could be designated F-26 or F-30, assuming that the winning contender for the NGAD competition becomes F-25 rather than F-36.
