The main reason to expand the ranges, or rather to integrate existing ranges, is to have more room to operate. The NTTR is a huge area, but for a fighter jet at supersonic speeds it really is not that big. Newer jets need more elbow room to really us their full potential. Also, the ability to use assets associated with the various ranges. Such as integrating boats in the Pacific ranges into the exercise. Using multiple ranges, each with unique assets, allows to adjust the curriculum to best train our airmen for the current situation they may be facing in a conflict.
