They are absolutely vital. I know an F-15 driver who was approached for the squadron, as they have a lot of time in the 117 before going back to the Eagle.

Dissimilar air combat is one aspect, the other is the Loyal Wingman work, getting pilots of F-35 / F-22 / F-15 used to the software now before all of the exotic unmanned airframes arrive on the flight line.
