IGs tend to be more reactive than proactive, and (at least theoretically) come in with total independence and a clean sheet of paper. I've been on both sides of IG investigations/inspections, neither was much fun. The most challenging two weeks of my career was undergoing a short/no notice Operational Readiness Inspection (ORI) that started the first full week of December back in the mid-90s.
