The vast majority of air carrier pilot training is conducted with full motion simulators rather than live flights. There has been considerable thunderstorm activity lately throughout southern CA/NV so the holding could be related to that. Moreover, the PMD VORTAC (NavAid) is located on the airport and these patterns appear consistent with standard holding.
