I may do a web page on the advantages and disadvantages of various lenses for long distance photos. However, too keep it short for the forum, you need to insure your camera has "mirror lock-up", some sort of remote trigger, a viewfinder magnifier, and the ability to meter with old fashioned lenses. Obviously, a good tripod is required. At high magnification, you will need a geared tripod head. You really want the Bogen 3275, which for some reason has "410" written on the outside. I picked up an old astronomical alt/az with a geared head that also works, though I prefer the bogen 3275.
