Thanks Duke! Secure comms makes a lot of sense as well. Currently the choppers use clear UHF AM freqs. Of course high speed data would allow secure comms also. It would be nice to catch one of the choppers on the way back, to see if there are any new "bumps".

Did you ever come across a system as shown in the attached link? These towers are fairly new. My somewhat educated guess is omni directional microwave data.
