I would say most people in Vegas have heard of Area 51 without a clear understanding (or interest) exactly where it is. If I tell people that I live in Rachel near Area 51 the usual question is: "Have you seen any UFOs up there?" The NTTR and related operations are a big employment factor in Vegas. Its hard to live in Vegas and not know someone who works there. But even though much of the NTTR is not as classified as Groom, those who work there don't talk about it much. And most locals know better than to put someone on the spot by asking too many questions. People that work at Groom will not talk about it at all. Period. If they do they do not work there. If asked where they work they will usually say: At Nellis.
