I saw a shuttle landing in October 2000. [I thought for a second we were at the same event.] What was funny was people started looking up in the air about a minute before you could see the shuttle. I had Edwards on the scanner and the Edwards personel said they couldn't see anything and made some snide remarks about the tourists. My guess is most of the viewers come from LA and their friends give them a heads-up over cell phone when the sonic boom is heard in LA. Or maybe they bring a radio and listen to LA radio.

FYI, if you want to take photos at a shuttle landing, stay out of the bleachers. They really vibrate as the crowd moves around, and I'm sure your photos will suffer. Better bring a folding chair and wait near the fence.
