If required the tail number is queried by the boom operator. Not sure why sometimes they ask and other times they don't. Perhaps they need it for their mission report and really did not get the tail number in the mission briefing. Or its simply protocol... I mean its not very likely that some freeloader in a rogue F-117 would belly up to the tanker for a free round of avgas...
