Sonic booms can be heard for 10+ miles easily. Around Rachel you can sometimes even hear them reflect off the mountain ranges. A nearby sonic boom is a sharp "boom" like an explosion that literally shakes the house and rattles windows. Further away they are a more drawn out rumble.

I suppose a jet flying super low could cause a more localized boom. But if this is a populated area I doubt a jet would fly that low there. Perhaps a meteor? A smaller version of the one in Russia a few years ago?
