A scanner with a good external antenna covers about 100 miles, give or take. Largely depends on the altitude of the aircraft, of course. An external antenna is important if you are listening to ranges not close to you.

I hope someone else can chime in on good models to buy. I have not shopped for a scanner in years. The most important feature to look for is that the scanner covers military air band. 225 to 400 MHz. I own three older model scanners. In the order of use they get: Uniden BCD 396T, Icom IC-R20, Yupiteru MVT-7100.

For a good external antenna look for DPD Productions MilTenna Omni. I have had one on my roof in Rachel for many years.
