So I live down in central Los Angeles and would love to be able to pick up some of the military stuff flying around but not sure what kind of scanner I would need. I don't think I would be able to pick up anything from the NTTR from this far away but I would really love to catch the F-117's flying by on their way out to do some tests off the coast, and would like to know what kind of scanner I need. Basically I'm curious what distances I would be able to pickup most stuff. Would I need one of those large antennas that go on my roof or could I get by with a good handheld or small desktop model?

They don't fly directly over LA but they fly a little farther to north so might be too far away to pickup without a larger antenna.
