I spoke with a friend that worked with Boeing during the time of them developing parts? for the B1-B Lancer. He had told me that it wasn't unusual for engineers to board a plane a zip off to parts unknown and return the next day saying they went out a desert retreat. Which he said was code for someplace in the middle of nowhere California or Nevada.

He went out on one flight with a team that was part of the inspection team after something failed. When they boarded the aircraft the windows were all shut and they were instructed to not open them. When they landed it was already dark and all the could see was their aircraft they were to inspect sitting lit from below the aircraft. They conducted their inspection took their notes and handed them to an engineer that was there and they loaded back on the plane and headed home. Total time on the ground was 3hrs and 15 minutes. He worked out of a building in Renton and flew out of Boeing field
