I know both of the AvWeek journalists who revealed the RQ-180. One is a friend, and I can assure you the designation is not "made up".

A few months after AvWeek published the article, I believe the then CSAF or a senior officer mentioned the RQ-180 designation at the annual AF Symposium in Washington.

As to why it hasn't been seen yet? Maybe the USAF is just getting better at hiding it? From what I've read here and elsewhere, it only flies out of Edwards at night.
