The facility may not be active, but it's a good bet there is still a great deal of valuable equipment and materials there, some of it GFE. There must be miles of copper wire out there, for example. Had copper thieves get caught locally several years back trying to steal cable from a long abandoned USAF radar site near WPAFB.

Most likely there are monitoring devices and sensors out there that, when tripped, results in a response team. Who you saw respond in the helo (local law enforcement, USAF SPs, private security etc.) is open to conjecture.
