Assuming it was the same artist, I've always thought the art on the ground looks more realistic than the release imagery...as if it was drawn/painted from photos.

I'd like to think too that there's anecdotal evidence of something flying high and fast in late 80s/early 90s - the sonic booms that were worked out to be 90,000 at Mach 4/5. Not to mention there must have been some project that saw them extend the runway to the length they did.

As the first article says, it was possibly too expensive or just not practical enough to keep it going.
