I don't think "the Aurora" ever existed. The name came up I believe in the early 90's. Subsequently any unusual aircraft sightings were attributed to "the Aurora". Technology demonstrators for the Lockheed SR-72 may have been some of the sightings.

At present there are indications that the SR-72 is in development. Its genesis goes back to at least the mid-2000's as a replacement for the SR-71. Since then it has morphed a number of times due to changing requirements. If and when it finally goes into production the SR-72 will have little resemblance even to the original concept from the early 2000's.

So, in a way, the SR-72 is one aspect of the Aurora which almost has become synonymous for black projects in general.
