I agree navigation is critical. After Tikaboo we desended down to 2500' AGL or so in the valleys along Rt 375. Nellis had a hard time providing flight following because we were so low they kept losing our ident, keeping coms was intermittent also. The 172 had a King KLN-94 VFR GPS which is pretty basic but did outline the boundary pretty good. All in all it's the most memorable 3.3 hours in my logbook.
