In the old days of the Nike missile defense system, the plan was to set the nuke off above the attacking force. The shockwave would knock the wings off of the Soviet bombers.

The story goes that the soviets had very few navigators and were always concerned about their pilots defecting to the west. Hence they would send their attack fleets out with one navigator and travel in a pack. Thus one nuke could finish them off.
