I think 'Bingo' was the word to shut everything down and park it away because there was an overhead or a snoop in the area.

It may have been a Yak-40 or 42 which is a small tri-engined jet that looked alot like a 727, but was about the size of a large bizjet (GV, Global Express etc). I understand the Soviets used a few as ELINT and COMMINT aircraft in eastern Europe in the 1970's and 80's, but I didn't know they flew as far as the US west coast, unless it was under the guise of a 'sightseeing' trip.

I like these stories - I'll bet the Soviets played similar games with western 'assets' as well!
