With experimental aircraft you have to look at the 'X' before the number. Look at the X-35 thats likely to be called the F-35 when it enters service. NASA and the USAF are up to the X-45 if my memory serves me correctly, so the next fighter (most probably a UCAV) will probably be an 'F' after the X-45.
