I think they need a platform that can go 'downtown' with a package all the way to a target and carry it's own load of weapons, rather than one which needs to stand off 100+ miles and still need its own fighter cover like an AWACS and a Joint STARS do.

The EF-111 proved in Libya and Iraq that it could escort a supersonic package in and out of a target area, something which the EA-6B cannot do, and an NKC-135 certainly wouldn't be able to do (even in a dive!).
