Flying them for an operator up in Canada in the 80s we used to call them the shed or flying boxcar, due to their shape and large cargo area. Slow, cumbersome, but operated well out of unimproved strips. The military version like the one pictured had a large ramp door on the back, but they could only carry around 6000lbs with a nominal fuel load. Later, PT6 engines made it a descent performer, but it topped out at less than 200 knots in cruise.
