Auto Pilot is used during most of the flight pilots are there to keep an eye on things during this time take off and landings are controlled by the pilots but the planes in particular can land themeselves. Basically modern aircraft fly by what ever instructions the pilot inputs into the onboard computors. I too prefer to have a couple of pilots up front!
