I would plan a trip to Las Vegas and visit the National Nuclear Testing Museum. Very informative info and actual displays of test equipment etc. They even have a video room where they pump up the sub woofers and try to simulate how loud the first test was it's really cool! Then you could get on the NTS tour and have a look for yourself at the craters and site.
