I bet your right. Diesel exhaust. Sounds like someone in security plugged a performance tuner into that truck. When running a performance tune like that on a diesel just a little tap on the accelerator will give you some black smoke. Stomp it and you'll get a smoke screen. At that speed on a dirt road with all the dust it might not be obviously coming from the tailpipe.
