I'm not going to defend the people running the procurement. I'm involved in the program and they're paying us well for our (tiny but important, if I may say so) piece of the job. But as a taxpayer, it's a nightmare. Appalling. Unforgivable.

And I agree with you on the whole "let's give the F-111 approach another try!" thing. For political & policy reasons more than technical ones, it's not a good way to go.

But my point in that earlier comment was that it is a big mistake to think of the F-35 as a stealthy F-16 and nothing more. I'm a big fan of the F-16; it's one of the great aircraft of history. But it cannot do what the F-35 will do. The '35 is replacing the '16 and several other types, but that does not mean they will have the same mission. That's like saying a horse is as good as a Bradley, because they're both employed in the movement of cavalry.
