OT: The Death of Colonel Tomb....

Since we have a community that likes aviation mysteries:

I grew up reading about Randy Cunningham's famous "5th kill" engagement in May 1972 with the mythical Col. Tomb. Obviously that person (Tomb) didn't exist, but do aviation historians have an idea whom Cunningham shot down? The MiG-17 pilot was obviously a steep cut above most other NVAF fighter pilots. I thought I remembered reading that the consensus had settled upon a certain NVAF Lt. Col. but I can't find that anywhere....
