the OVERHEAD COST of encrypting (generating keys, tracking keys, equipment/sw to encrypt, equipment/sw to decrypt, etc) is certainly more than what is needed to not encrypt. the transmission of the data itself (a string of 1's and 0's) is not altered in any way so there isn't any difference whether the data is encrypted or not to the actual transmission process. in many cases the data is encrypted for transmission and not encrypted for onboard recording; in the past weight was a major factor but probably isn't as big a consideration anymore.
