The road from Highway 93 to the intersection at 37° 18.903'N, 115° 17.823'W is fine even in a rental car as long as there is no snow. After the intersection there are ruts, small washes, etc. If it's muddy a 4WD is necessary. Rental Car companies at the airport have them but cost much more obviously. If you're serious about the hike, I'd fork out the money. I had to pay for a tow truck from Alamo two times now and in the end the initial cost will be chump change! Not to mention the hike back to the highway although cell service is much better now. Besides, you're on holiday, have fun. Rent a 4WD, stay at Windmill Ridge (nice cabins with good food in Alamo) the night before and hike up the next day. Windmill Ridge is close to the dirt road out to Tikaboo Peak.

If you have further questions, feel free to shoot me a private email and I'll be happy to give you advise...
