The studies at Yucca indicate groundwater is a bigger problem than first thought. The spent fuel rods will have to be left in the protective canisters. Since that is the case, might as well store them on site.

There are sites in Utah and Texas that don't have the groundwater problem, but they have more political clout, which is why Nevada was selected, rather than good science.

Terrorism of these shipments is a big deal. In my research on Queen City Summit, I came across government documents indicating that nuclear waste should not be trucked up Queen City Summit because the trucks would have to slow down to make it up the grade, and thus be easier to attack. That is why the current route is to use route 95. [click on link]
