Well as a precaution you might wear one of those respirator mask things......and perhaps one of those disposable paper like coverall suits.....the kind they wear in clean rooms (??????) or something on that order.......And a hard hat
States with these tunnels should have some agency that oversees or has info on them........Such as CA Dept of Trans....Colorado DOT, etc, etc......Tourist boards..
I would, however, be more worried about tunnel structural safety.....
If still used by trains are there places to get out of the way (otherwise you might be toast).......
