If you remember we lost a F-15 over Benghazi,Libya that the AF attributed too much weight on one wing that had 1,000 pounds of bombs on one side (plus its asymmetrical M61 cannon offset on the same side) and none on the other, and spun it in, punching out at the last moment. They made it VERY clear right off the bat that it was NOT pilot error (even before the wreckage was cold) while determining only much later that it was a weight/balance issue. Even though there was some visual evidence from on-scene photos (before we destroyed the wreckage with a bombing strike) that AAA or SAM damage was evident, the AF stuck by its claim of "mechanical error" that made the Eagle smack the ground hard, and then put the pilots incommunicado so the media could not ask the most obvious question "were you shot down?" I guess the nest obvious question was if you were flying with too much weight on one side because of too many bombs under one wing there is NO way to solve that problem and ... wait...hey, how about that emergency pickle that jettisons all external loads and then fly back home? Oh yes, I guess they forgot about that too. Hmmm....
