I won't speak to Groom in particular, but I know that at other secure facilities, SOF/intelligence community people do participate in exercises. They are never unannounced. People get killed that way. We techie types would be told there was an exercise going on, so I can't imagine the security people wouldn't be.

We have people who devote a lot of time and resources into learning the best techniques for infiltrating places. If the people tasked with preventing infiltration can defeat these guys, then it builds a high level of confidence that the facility and its contents are secure. Just makes sense.

As for tanks & Apaches & what-not, just bear in mind the Brits have their own tabloid TV. I think they invented it, right?
