The mailbox is a good place to camp (off the road and far enough away from the mailbox to allow the rancher access to his mail). There is a good chance that you will have company from fellow sky watchers, which in itself can be quite entertaining. However, aside from the landing lights of the Janets you won't see much there. The mailbox is a good place to listen to Groom tower and approach if you have a scanner (and know the frequencies).

I would not recommend camping right at the back gate. There are several areas along the 10-mile back gate road from Rachel to the gate where you can easily park a large RV. If you camp there during the week, with a view of the gate, there is a good chance that you will see the red and blue warning lights of the Russian radar sites just inside the gate. If the sites are active it means there is a test that night. The test articles usually fly over the back gate area, but with dimmed lights, so they are very hard to spot. This is a good place to scan the various Dreamland MOA frequencies from our scanner list.
