When I was working for EG&G, a very common item for those engineers who chose to wear ties was a tie clasp made out of an EG&G image sensor reject. Let's just say the civilian branch of EG&G I worked for was not very high security.

Security of sub-assemblies in the electronic business is not very high, simply because you can't find enough personel to work for the military. Many parts get farmed out, but only the military knows how everything gets put together.

I wrote an article for Electronic Design on battery capacity testing a few years ago. I got a call about a year later regarding the article. It turned out a university researcher working on a battery system for a CIA satellite. Like I said, the work get farmed out everywhere, so no subassemblies are really secure.
