"the need for a gun on the airplane".........This is an old argument (going back to at least the 50's)....Seems like every time we built a plane without a "gun" we have to add one later....case(s) in point....F-86D to the F-86L.......F-4B/C/D to the later the F-4E.......The philosophy in the 50's was up and shoot a rocket at the boggie, really a ADC mission statement.......But in a conflict/war a gun is a great asset........The F-22's gun,unlike previous birds, is hidden by a door....
