This NASA article describes the investigation into potentially reactivating these prototypes, and using them as a testbed. Note that the article is dated November 2010, and describes the Ames contract as an investigation that will last "weeks". So the fact that GE imagery from July 2011 shows an umbilical connecting one of the prototypes to Stargazer (the L-1011) is at least a hint that Orbital found the prototypes to be in good enough shape to be worth investigating further.
