Having read the accident investigation report (now declassified) and having visited the crash site numerous times, I can confirm absolutely that it was an F-117A. I was privileged, on one occasion, to escort some of the pilot's family members to the site to replace the memorial flag.

At the time of the accident, I do not believe the Air Force was planning to declassify the existence of aircraft. It was eventually revealed because the previous level of secrecy made it impossible to fully integrate the F-117A into the order of battle. War fighters could not employ an asset they knew nothing about.
