We seem to be arguing between "USAF built Aurora" and "USAF chose not to build Aurora and nothing happened". I remember a series of statements by USAF brass in the 1990s when SR-71 was being retired that a number of attempts to replace SR-71 hadn't worked out well. Makes one lean to the theory that Area 51 may well have hosted Aurora-type demonstrators that did not succeed in proving technology to the point that it could become operational. As we saw in Iraq, planning to do something ain't the same as actually succeeding in doing it....
